Somerton Latest to Benefit From £58m County Infrastructure Boost

Engineering work due to get underway in Somerton next month will give more than 2,000 rural homes and businesses access to ultrafast broadband speeds.

The work is being carried out by the UK’s largest rural alternative network provider Gigaclear, part of a £58 million infrastructure boost in the county. The first homeowners in the town could be connected to full fibre broadband as early as next spring, with the work due to be completed by the end of 2024.

Delivery Director Charlie Freed said: “We know there are many great benefits to living in rural communities but having access to fast and reliable broadband is not always something you’d expect. People living in towns and cities, on average, enjoy much faster speeds than people in rural locations and Gigaclear is on a mission to narrow this gap. Taking our full fibre network to residents in Somerton will enable them to work from home, stream online entertainment, scroll and gameplay just like everyone else.”

During the engineering work, Gigaclear will be utilising existing Openreach ducts and poles wherever possible in order to minimise disruption.

About Gigaclear

Gigaclear has been designing, building and operating new gigabit, full fibre networks since 2011 during which time it has firmly established itself as the largest rural, full fibre alternative network (altnet) in the UK.

The Abingdon-based Communications Provider now employs more than 750 people across eight office locations, serving more than 80,000 customers throughout 26 counties. Gigaclear is on track to meet its business plan objectives to connect 500,000 properties to ultrafast full fibre in 2024.

The Gigaclear difference lies in its vision to connect underserved rural towns and villages, where Gigaclear as the first to invest, delivers a future-proofed, quality network that can serve 100 per cent of connected properties with ultrafast speeds.
