Collection day changes
Festive Bank Holidays mean a change in collection days for rubbish and recycling – please make sure you don’t miss out.
Collections are unchanged up to and including collections on Friday 24 Dec. No collections on Monday 26 Dec or Monday 2 Jan. Both weeks’ collections are a day later than usual, including Saturday collections on 31 Dec and 7 Jan for waste usually collected Friday.
Recycling site opening
All 16 recycling sites are open on their usual winter hours over Christmas and New Year, but all close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Crewkerne recycling site will have one extra day open on Tuesday 27 Dec.
Weather watch
Severe weather can disrupt collections so please bear with us if we see snow and ice in the coming weeks.
We’ll return as soon as possible for any missed collections, but if conditions are bad we may not be able to meet our
usual ‘return in two days’ target. Check
somersetwaste.gov.uk for updates.
In the meantime, you may wish to ‘clear the decks’ before the festive period so you have room in your recycling boxes and refuse bin.
Recycle all you can in your next collection. If you’re able, you may want to take black bag refuse to a recycling site so your bin is empty when the festive season starts.
Waste less this Christmas
The festive season always generates extra waste, but much can be avoided by reducing, reusing and recycling.
Check somersetwaste.gov.uk/festive for tips and guidance, from meal planning to cutting back on cardboard.
What to do with festive favourites?
⯀ Wrapping paper: Only paper wrap
can be recycled (black box or recycling site). Glittery/foil/plastic wrap must go in the refuse bin.
Remove tape, bows, decorations. We cannot take paper in black sacks for recycling.
Pringles (and other similar tubes):
Accepted at 12 sites (all but Castle Cary, Cheddar, Dulverton and Somerton).
Tubs and tins of sweets and
chocolates: Plastic/metal in the Bright Blue Bag, or take to recycling site.
And Christmas trees?
Compost if possible.
Remove all decorations before recycling
– real trees can be composted or taken to any recycling site.
Garden waste subscriber? Trees up to 6ft feet go out with first 2023 collection. Arrange a charity tree collection for a donation, including St Margaret’s Hospice or Dorothy House Hospice Care just-helping.org.uk/register-tree.
